Angry Birds Star Wars: May the qwwaaaakkkk be with you…
Within days, this app has already breached 5 million downloads. You must have heard about the amalgamation of these two marketing behemoths by now… yes… it’s the mobile phone smash hit Angry Birds themed with one of the most epic films of all time, Star Wars! Normally here at AGR we give these smash hits games a miss since they must obviously be played, but this game is so galactically amazing we’ve decided to highlight some of the key parts about it.
Gameplay: If you’ve never played Angry Birds before, how have you lived you may want to read our review on the original Angry Birds first, as the gameplay is pretty much exactly the same.
The Rovio team have now taken their winning formulae and mixed it all together. So they have their original physics game based on land scenes within the films, and they’ve thrown in their new Space levels every now and then.
“These are not the birds you are looking for”: The average gamer should smirk through most of the game as they recognise the scenes and characters (Luke, Obi Wan, Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Chewie, R2-D2 and C-3PO all make an appearance!) Not only do you get to see them, but you also get to fling them with your trusty catapult! This is where some truly original modifications have been woven in – each of the characters has special powers which are slightly adjusted from the original Angry Birds game. In short you get to use the Force, wield a lightsaber, blast pigtroopers and more…
“You’re a little short for a pigtrooper”: If you’re not just the average gamer and you like the original Star Wars films, then you’ll be immersed in the film as soon as you hear the classic sound tracks with authentic blaster sound effects. Generally you should feel warm and fuzzy when you see the beautiful desert sunset Tattoine backdrops and the swamps of Degabird levels.
If however you sometimes feel the flow and ebb of the force within you, then you’ll absolutely love this game. The amount of game theming which has going into this production is unbelievable – the Star Wars dev team have gone to town with absolutely everything!… the fonts, the scene transitions, the pause menus, the star displays… it’s all tweaked towards the Star Wars style!
Admiral AckBird: “It’s a Trap! Squaaawwwk!”: Whether you’re a Jedi or not doesn’t matter because this game is setup with excellent classic gameplay elements. There’s a collectors page where you’ll be able to see all the characters and items you’ve unlocked (kind of like the Lego Star Wars unit collection page). Several levels are packaged within multiple stages of Tattoine, the Death Star, Path of the Jedi and Golden Egg levels (…Hoth will be coming soon!). Also, as you play the stars you attain will allow you to unlock the next levels and stages… all classic formulae. The one thing that is different is that they’re much more explicit about asking for money to unlock Path of the Jedi. I’m in two minds as to whether this is a good thing or not, but there does seem to be a considerable amount of free content which you can play before you decide.
Rating : 4.5/5 Angry Birds Star Wars is a phenomenal game which will cast jedi mind tricks on you to keep playing forever. If it weren’t for the pay element this would have been 5 stars.
…no doubt, Angry Birds Star Wars merchandise will be on shelves near you soon too!
